Raisin Water: Home Remedy for Constipation in Baby

Raisin water is well known for strengthening the liver’s function and is a natural laxative. One of the best home remedies for a baby suffering from constipation is Raisin water or puree.
I was told by my kids’ pediatric dietitian Dr Shama Kulkarni, when especially my elder one had stomach trouble during 8-9 months age.
Babies once start with solids may suffer from constipation especially when they are around 8 months and when they are already eating almost all foods in bland form.
Raisin water is a very good and safe home treatment to strengthen the digestive system.

soak raisins
• Soak the raisins overnight in boiled/normal (2 Tbsp) water
• Strain the water in the morning
• Squeeze the bulged raisins
smash raisin
• Press the raisins well to extract the juice

Black dry raisins are the best for constipation as dark-colored raisins are organically dried grapes in sunlight while yellow raisins are mixed with sulfur dioxide and you can’t afford to offer anything to your baby that has chemicals in a significant amount.

You can start giving raisin water to your baby at about 7 months.
Before that, breastfeeding moms can consume raisins.

For babies who suffer from constipation frequently give it as often as once in 2 days (Doctor’s permission is a must).

Breathlessness usually starts during the second trimester and as the baby grows and the hormonal changes occur, this trouble keeps on increasing. The growing uterus increases the pressure on diaphragm and hence lungs are affected. Thus, breathing exercises are a great rescue from breathlessness.

How to Practice Deep Breathing:

The best way and very easy-to-do exercise is doing meditation every morning and just before going to the bed.
When you are in a calm soothing ambiance, mediation and deep breathing is easy. It creates very positive vibes for you and your baby.

Here are the tips for the best deep breathing experience:

1. When you are doing it in the morning, do it in the sunlight, fresh healthy open air like in a garden, balcony etc.
2. At night, you may want to try this in candle light with aroma diffuser and a bit dark place because it helps in concentrating and relaxing

How Seatbelt Protects a Pregnant Woman?

carseatbelt
Throughout your pregnancy phase, your own and the baby’s safety should be the top priority. Whenever you go out in a car, always wear a seat belt properly. After wearing the seat belt, your upper body movement is limited and in the case of crash, it keeps you and your baby at a significant distance from the dashboard and the steering wheel. Also, the force of impact is divided between pelvis and thorax ensuring safety.
Car crashes are the one of reasons for deadly fetus injuries. Wearing seat belt during pregnancy is a must but always check whether the seat belt is properly designed to ensure your personal and the baby’s safety during a crash. Which Doctor to Consult For Kids Height Issues?

Children’s growth depends on the growth hormone production by the pituitary gland. When this gland is somehow damaged or inefficient to produce enough growth hormones, kids suffer from poor growth issues.
Endocrinology is the branch of medical science which studies the hormonal issues and system of the human body.
Please Note: This is a study-based post by a non-medical professional, and should not be treated as a medical advice. I am sharing this information from my study, research and experience.

Who is a Paediatric Endocrinologist?

Paediatric Endocrinologists are primary physicians that usually deal with puberty, hormonal growth issues, diabetes and some other hormonal and gland related issues. Paediatric Endocrinologists are trained differently from adult Endocrinologists. The majorly deal with childhood and teenage growth issues. Their training includes medical school training, paediatric residency and then fellowship programme. They treat a selection of childhood and teenage issues like obesity, growth hormone deficiency, puberty issues, thyroid gland issues, diabetes, and fall in blood sugar level and some more. Ref: HealthyChildren.org

What Does A Paediatric Endocrinologist Consult About?

Sometimes your child is not capable of attaining the normal growth as expected at his/her age which MAY be because of the insufficient production of growth hormones. Till 2 years, the normal growth of kids is around 2 inches. If a child is not able to attain this growth and is suffering from a short stature, paediatric Endocrinologist is the right person to consult with. Usually, a paediatric Endocrinologist examines a child, analyses his and family his family’s medical history and may ask to perform blood tests to check hormone levels. They also do diagnosis for juvenile diabetes. They also consult about the gland disorders and hormonal imbalances that may affect your child’s growth and health.
The most popular paediatric Endocrinologist I know is Dr. Waman Khadilkar from Pune (also visits hospitals in Mumbai). He is the Governing council member of Paediatric & Adolescent Endocrinology chapter of Indian Academy of Paediatrics. Read more about Doctor Khadilkar: IndiaChildGrowth.com
Please note every child is unique and they may achieve their milestones at different times hence it is not fair to compare your kids growth rate with others of his age. Also Hormonal deficiency though major but is only one of possible causes of growth issues.

What causes Acne during Pregnancy?

Acne during Pregnancy: Causes and Remedies

Acne is one of the common issues faced in pregnancy just like insomnia. I personally did not experience acne during pregnancy but many of my friends did. I have seen many women who have never had acne/pimples ever before experiencing it in pregnancy only. This is completely normal and nothing to worry much about.
While you are pregnant, your body is undergoing a lot of physical and hormonal changes. This flux in your hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, causes a lot of changes in your skin. The skin gets excessively oily or dry, both of which can lead to acne. However, don’t worry as acne problems generally settle after childbirth.

What causes it?

There are many different factors that can cause acne during pregnancy on your skin. Knowing the causes can help you prevent and treat acne at home.
• First and the most common reason to have acne during pregnancy are the hormonal changes going inside your body.
• If you have a sensitive skin, the chances to get acne, especially in the first trimester, are even more.
• If your skin produces excess oil (sebum) due to hormonal changes, it may clog your pores and eventually cause blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.
• The amount of blood sugar circulating in the body also keeps on changing. This is another reason for acne and pimples during pregnancy.
• The excitement and nervousness about being a new mom also add-on to this problem. Some medications prescribed by your doctor can also aggravate this issue.
• Taking an unhealthy diet which involves a lot of sugar or oil can also lead to acne.
• A dehydrated body is always more prone to acne.
• Bad skin care habits and the lack of a proper skincare routine can also cause acne during pregnancy.

How can I Prevent Acne during Pregnancy?

Even if you are not facing acne issues, you must make sure to take various precautions. Prevention is better than cure and pregnancy is very unpredictable. You never know what may happen next. To avoid acne and maintain a flawless skin:
• Follow a good skincare regime consistently
• Drink plenty of water
• Do not sleep with makeup on
• Wash your face thrice a day, with a gentle cleanser
• Avoid using cloth towels or sharing them
• Switch to paper towels instead
• Always wash your face before going to bed
• Keep your skin moisturized
• Do not exfoliate too much or in a harsh way
• Avoid products with alcohol or parabens in them

Can You Really Treat Acne during Pregnancy?

It might be wrong to say that you can completely get rid of acne during pregnancy or treat them. After all, your body is undergoing hormonal changes. It is, thus, difficult to get rid of acne before the hormone balance is regained. This depends from pregnancy to pregnancy.
However, you can temporarily treat them by some safe over-the-counter medications, healthy eating habits or by using some home remedies. You can also apply topical acne ointments to reduce acne or inflammation.
Remember: Do not opt for any ointment or medications without consulting your gynaecologist. All medications are not safe during pregnancy (such as “Isotretinoin”) and may pose a risk of birth defects. Go for mild medications and home remedies after doing a proper research. Never self-medicate any issue during pregnancy.

Indian Baby Weight Gain Chart: First 6 Months

The average weight of Indian newborns is somewhere around 3.2 -3.4 kg. However, it is completely normal for them to weigh anywhere between 2.6 and 3.8 kg and still be healthy. The first six months of a newborn are very crucial. Most importantly, the weight gain in first 6 months matters a lot in the overall being of an infant. The body is developing mentally and physically at a high level. Maintaining the body weight of your infant can improve his/her health significantly.
The weight gain in infants might be different for breastfed and formula fed baby. Nonetheless, breastfed infants are more likely to gain the right amount of weight than formula fed ones. As in India, we promote breastfeeding, usually all infants follow the same pattern of weight gain and body development. In this study based article, we will see the Average Weight Gain in Breastfed Babies.

Understanding Breastfed Indian Newborns Weight Gain

Indian children are different and so is their growth velocity. Although all babies are different and grow at their own level, there is an average weight gain chart recommended for them. These weight gain/growth charts help parents keep a track of their baby’s growth and be assured of his/her health.

Boys Weight Gain in First Six Months:

indian baby weight chart 0-6molowres

So, on a general scale, it can be said that Indian baby boys gain about 2.5 times the birth weight in the first six months.

Girls Weight Gain in First Six Months:

The relative growth of an Indian baby girl is expected to take place in the following way. If the baby is born 2.2 kgs, then he will be around 3.5 kgs in the first 2 months followed by being 5.2 kgs in 5 months and then around 5.8 in 6 months.

In this way, you can calculate your baby’s expected weight gain. Also, please note that these are just average growth rates. It is not necessary that your baby will follow the exact growth rate and such matric for weight gain. However, in case there is too much difference in the growth rate of your baby than expected, you must talk to a paediatrician.

Reasons of First Week Weight Gain/Loss in Babies:

Usually, healthy newborns are expected to lose around 8-10% of their birth weight. This is because:
• they are born with some extra fluid, and
• receive only small amounts of colostrum for the first few days if they are breastfed
But, a healthy baby generally regains that weight within the first two weeks after the birth. The mother begins normally producing enough breastmilk later on. Hence, healthy babies usually get back to their birth weight in first two to three weeks.
Some more factors that can contribute to losing weight in infants are:
• sleeping more and feeding less
• sickness in the baby
• mother’s health
• stress/anxiety in the mother
• if the mother is pregnant or on contraceptive pills

What Factors Affect an Indian Baby’s Weight Gain in First 6 Months?

These are a few factors that can help Indian infants weight gain in first six months.

Breastfeeding Mom’s Diet:

It is highly important to take care of a breastfeeding mom’s diet just like the pregnancy diet. Breast milk is an essential part of the baby’s nutrition. What a mother eats has a direct effect on baby’s weight gain in first six months to a certain extent. If you follow the do’s and don’ts of a good diet, you can improve your breast milk. Therefore, you can monitor your baby’s weight gain pretty well. Check these diet guides if you are a breastfeeding mom.

Sickness or Health Issues in the Baby:

If your baby is suffering from some health issues, then it may have an effect on his/her weight gain. Any birth defects or exposure to infection during gestation are likely to affect a baby’s weight gain drastically.

Mother’s Health:

If you are stressed or not physically healthy, your breastmilk can affect your baby’s weight. Some health conditions in mothers such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart diseases may affect the baby’s weight.

Premature Babies:

If babies are born before their due date, they are often smaller and have a low birth weight. Such babies take time to gain weight after birth.

Habits and Nutrition during Pregnancy:

A mother who gets better nutrition and follows healthy lifestyle habits in pregnancy gives birth to a healthier baby. Thus, the weight gain in first 6 months in such babies is also better.

FAQs:

What happens if a baby is born underweight?

If a baby is born underweight, there are a few health risks involved. A direct and most common impact on the baby’s health is not gaining weight as recommended.

My baby is not gaining proper weight. Is he/she getting enough breast milk?

Weight Loss In Babies After Birth: What Do New Parents Need To Know?

Do Babies Lose Weight Soon After Birth? Why?

When I became a mother for the first time, I learnt that the babies lose some weight during first week of their birth. New parents might worry about it but this is a completely normal thing in every newborn baby.

How Much Weight do Babies Lose? In How Many Day?

The fall in baby’s weight during the initial phase is quite normal. In line with the research performed by AmericanPregnancy.org, even if a baby doesn’t meet the standard growth chart or development guidelines, he or she can be healthy as loss in weight is natural in newborns.

During the first 5-7 days of birth, newborns are expected to lose around 5% of their weight if they are formula-fed.

And, if the baby is healthy and breast-fed, he or she is expected to lose around 7-10% of their weight in the initial days.

Healthy babies retain the lost weight within 2 weeks of their birth. Usually babies gain around 30 grams of their weight every day during this phase. In case of a sick or premature baby, the weight gain process may take up to 3 weeks from the time of their birth.

FAQs: Loss of Weight in Babies Post Delivery

1. What is the Difference Between Weight Loss in Breastfed Baby and Formula-fed Baby?

In comparison to a formula fed baby, a breast-fed baby feeds lesser due to colostrum production and also first week new mom produces less milk, hence they lose more weight. Breastfed babies keep losing weight till the breast milk production becomes sufficient. This is the reason approx. 18.7 days is taken in regaining the lost weight in breastfed babies while this time frame for bottle-fed babies is around 2 weeks.

2. Is Low Milk Supply The Reason of My Baby’s Weight Loss?

No matter what you eat, you are not going to produce the milk on day one. Its natural way of body to produce colostrum which is produced hardly a few table spoons in first 1-2 days (Less in the case of first pregnancy). This colostrum is more important than that pf the regular breast milk, so, a new mom simply should not worry. Worrying will in fact make the body produce lesser milk.

3. When to See a Doctor?

Anyways, this phenomenon will happen in hospital under continuous monitoring of the doctors and nurses but once you are back home and observe any of below symptoms, you should seek medical attention.
A. In the case of fever, a newborn will seem low or show lethargy or he/she will show rejection to feeding
B. His/her body will show the symptoms of dehydration including dry lips or eyes. Their skin may seem loosened or sunken soft head spot may appear. Also, if the number of wet diapers is lesser than 6 then the baby is probably dehydrated.
Please remember that every pregnancy is unique that means what you experience in first pregnancy may not be the same in the second. Hence, never compare the cases and baby’s weight. Even the growth charts are just for your reference. No baby will follow one given line on growth charts or said milestones on same given age range. So, as a new mom, just focus on your health, diet and newborn’s care.
