Tips on minimizing Cold and Cough in Babies and Toddlers

When babies are healthy, parents too can sleep in peace. The little ones have very low resistance to infection and when they come in contact with an adult person having cold or flu, they become sick and restless. Winter has arrived and cold and cough is a common sight in every house. It’s painful for the parents to watch their kids sneezing or coughing badly and taking too many doses of antibiotics. Why not take precautions to avoid cold and cough?

Tips to keep your Baby Away from Cold and Cough This Winter

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the ultimate protection from cold and cough for the small babies. Sufficient feeding not just provides the essential nutrients to the baby but boosts his immune system as well. Apart from protein and fat, breast milk also contains the useful elements like enzymes and antibodies that fight against a selection of diseases and increase baby’s immunity.

Keep Dust and Dirt Away

vacuum ceaner
Allergy from dirt and dust is one of the main causes of cough and cold in babies. The household items like stuffed toys, carpets and cushions are houses of the germs and bacteria. When your baby touches these things not washed regularly, he can get infected and hence runny or stuffed nose and sneezing as a result. Try to keep the moisture away from your baby’s personal things like cushions, carpets etc. Also, it’s better to keep your baby at a distance from the things like soft toys where germs and bacteria mostly reside.

Pets

Pets are the reason for several infections in babies. Be it a pigeon, a cat or a dog; when they travel from one place to another, they either spread the dust or bring infection with then when they sit on your baby’s bed or nearby areas. It’s okay if you got a pet at home but try to keep your baby away from them to avoid infection.

Pigeons

pigeon
Pigeons are found in large numbers in the Metro Cities of India. The feathers and the dropping of these birds are the most common reason for allergies in Indian Kids. (I learned it when my elder son developed allergy during our stay in Mumbai and a famous Paediatrician in Mumbai explained the below reason to me). Now, if you said my kid was never close to these birds then this is how they are coming in contact: when the pigeons fly close to your house, make their nests in balcony or even when they sit on the drying laundry in your balcony, they leave their minute droppings/feather dust and that is how the child comes in contact with that.
Solution: Put on the bird nets in your balconies. Do not feed these birds in your balcony (Please understand the reason and not the word against the survival of the birds)

Old Furniture

old furniture
The complex gaps or slits in old furniture are the favorite places of germs, bacteria and spiders. Spider net on old furniture can be found in many houses. Try to clean up the old furniture once a week or biweekly to keep your baby safe from cold and cough.

Use Mosquito Net

The diseases spread by mosquitoes don’t need any more highlight in the present scenario. Be it Dengue or any other type of mosquito; babies need special protection at home while sleeping. A mosquito net is must for the babies as the baby remains safe inside the shield and parents can also sleep calmly. If possible, restrict the use of mosquito repellents as they are not health friendly.

Go For Sanitizers

hand sanitize
Most of the germs and bacteria enter a body through the nose and mouth and dirty hands clear away their paths. Sanitizers are must-haves in every household for a healthy life. Simply cleaning the hands and sanitizing the hands are two different things. The essential components of the hand sanitizers like ethyl alcohol act as antiseptic and keep the germs away from the hands. Babies are active and they can crawl anywhere and touch anything. It’s better to apply baby friendly hand sanitizers on those soft hands.

Controlled Hygiene

Always try to maintain the hygiene around your baby. Human body develops natural immunity which fights against a range of diseases. Using sanitizers or other chemicals more than recommended or very frequently to keep your baby away from bacteria and germs can affect his skin and health. The development of the natural immunity can be hampered this way. . Educate yourself on how vaccines work in our bodies to know how immunity is developed.

Humidifiers

One of reasons of cough and cold in babies is the dry air which is during winters. So use of humidifiers in baby’s room at night is highly recommended. It is also healthy for baby’s skin and respiratory system. Babies do not like steamers or nebulisers so even after have cold, use of humidifiers can help you keep your baby’s surrounding moist enough. Try to keep the room temperature controlled (as per your baby’s comfort) for extra protection.

Essential Oils

essential-oils-Roll on
Essential oils are very effective in fighting against cold and cough in babies. Unlike many cold-relieving products, essential oils do not contain the ingredients like sulphates, parabens, phthalates and synthetic elements. You can add few drops of essential oils in the humidifier and get 2 in 1 benefit. Use essential oils like Lavender essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil, Sandalwood and Rosalina. There are essential oil roll-ons available too in the market to keep your baby safe without putting much effort.

MyPedia Reader Storybook- A book for Children & by Children

Pearson India recently organized an event and actuated the launch of MyPedia Reader on November 29th, 2017. The major goal behind the launch of the product was to encourage the little innocent minds who aspire to showcase their creativity through writing. With the launch of MyPedia Reader, it’s expected that the children who are inclined towards creative writing will be leveraged as a big platform will be there to bring their talent in front of a wide spectrum of juvenile audience. During the event, the Pearson group articulated that the book is for children, by children. It’s indeed a ground-breaking step in the Indian literature and a blessing for the young writers.

Kids are Fearless and Creative

Adora Svitak, a 12 year old child prodigy recently shared her ideas regarding the need for childish creativity in the world in one of the TED Talks event. In her speech, she highlighted the fact that children are considered responsible for creating a mess or thinking nonsense or illogical things but no one supports their fearless creativity and sheer innocence. They are often criticized for their weird behaviour. She added that we need “childish” thinking, wild creativity, bold ideas and especially optimism. The fact is most of the adults deserve to be blamed for the messed up world of today where people think of limits and consequences before giving their creativity an edge.
Children are the fearless source of creativity and imagination which can prepare the next generation for the future. MyPedia Reader supports such brave and creative juveniles and offers an opportunity to present their bold ideas and thoughts in front of a huge audience, which is similar-minded and needs a push to showcase their own creativity. Juvenile thoughts are pure and limitless. They can see what adults can’t or don’t want to see. They have a different perception of the world. Even in a TED Talks event, Sir Ken Robinson said that children are not afraid of being wrong and hence they put 100% efforts in bringing out their best. He added that the children are born artists but lose this capacity while growing up as fear of being wrong is introduced in their small brains.
MyPedia Reader appreciates such raw and fearless talents and let them express their views through short stories that reach the other raw minds like them. In line with the thoughts shared by the Pearson India team, the other goal of the MyPedia Media event was to encourage the learning among the tiny creative minds. As children write the short stories and contribute the illustrations, the readers of the same age group can get the thoughts and ideas easily and get inspired by them. According to the Pearson India group, the three major pillars holding the product firmly are imagination, creativity and critical thinking in children. The motive behind the launch of MyPedia Reader also complies with the declaration of the United Nations that aim encouraging the creative learning for children.

Using Syringe to Feed Medicine to a Baby

Most of the medicines don’t taste good as they are not made to satisfy the taste buds. Babies are very difficult to feed the medicines. Some medicines are sweet but the baby is not cooperative and hence nuisance is faced by the parents while feeding him the medicines. Neither you can leave the medicine doses nor can you go harsh to the baby. Well, syringes can be an effective tool to sort out such problems. Here is how you can use the syringe for your baby

Steps to Feed Medicine by a Syringe to a Baby?

Get a Medicine Feeder Syringe

A Medicine feeder syringe is different than usual syringe and are specially made for the purpose of feeding medicine. It has liquid volume marking too so you can feed precise doses to your child.
You can buy such special baby products on Amazon India
Like this one:

Hygiene before using the syringe

Always wash your hands before feeding your baby anything. When it’s about medication, take special care of the hygiene. We touch many things throughout the day and welcome a plethora of germs and bacteria. Touching a syringe without washing the hands properly may spread those germs and infect the medicine.
Filling the syringe
Always read the instructions given on the back of the medicine to fill the syringe with an appropriate dose. Also, if the medicine is not generic then read the doctor’s prescription first and then fill the syringe accordingly. You can also get the syringe level marked by the doctor or pharmacist.
Press the syringe’s plunger to the bottom so that no air is there inside the syringe.
Enter the syringe’s tip in the medicine bottle or a container in which the medicine has been poured and pull the plunger in one go to the marked level. Always try to avoid the air bubbles in the syringe.

Feed the Medicine Carefully

If it’s a toddler and already aware of medicine to be taken then talk to the child and show the syringe, it’s not scary. Tell the child that he/she would not taste the bitterness of the medicine with this instrument. This way child will be cooperative.
For a baby, just hold the lower jaw carefully, touch the syringe to end of the lips, naturally the baby will open the mouth. Feed the medicine without rushing.
Medicine should not go by surprise in baby’s mouth, because then throwing up is natural reaction.
Don’t Squeeze the Syringe on baby’s Tongue
Put the tip of the syringe close to inner part of cheek and tongue so that they can’t taste it and cry. You can slow down the squeezing process to avoid the medicine get spilled by the baby. If baby get scared or tastes the medicine, he will instantly spill it and all the efforts will get wasted.

Let Toddlers try as well

It’s good to make the medicine squeezing a habit for your baby. Just offer him the syringe filling it with the right amount of dose and tell him to squeeze it exactly like you showed him last time. After few tries, this will become an important chore for him.

Tip: Ice Numbs the Taste Buds

You can also put some chilled water or melting ice on his tongue first with the help of the syringe and then try the same filling it with the medicine as his tongue will become numb by then. This will cut down on your effort and make the process effortless.

Tell Them the Truth

Lying about the medicines to your baby may not go great in the long run. Some day he will realize it and create more nuisances while taking it. It’s better you tell him that this medicine is to cure his health and it’s not something scrumptious. Everyone has to take it and the bitter taste doesn’t last long.

Tips for Eye Drops: Let the Temperature Normalize

Babies often get irritated when something cold falls on their sensitive body parts like eyes. Try to hold the eye drop bottle or medicine bottle in hand for some time and let its temperature become normal. Your baby will have no problem with the eye drops if the temperature is normal and the drops fall on the corner of the eyes.

Consult the Doctor for Options

If your baby is not able to take the fluid medicines or resisting too much while squeezing them ask your doctor about the alternatives. Your baby may like sweet tablets.
Being parents is a very difficult and responsible job. You have to tolerate your baby’s rejections, non-cooperation and cries still his health remains your first priority. The above tips for feeding medicines to your baby through syringe in a smart manner can definitely save your time and efforts and it won’t let your camaraderie with your baby get affected.

Foods to be avoided by Nursing Moms for Baby’s trouble-free Stomach

Diet is a very important part of the breastfeeding regime. When you are breastfeeding your baby, taking care of his nutrition may not be enough. You need to think about your own diet as well as whatever you eat is transferred to the baby through breast milk. Even though it is unclear if a moms diet has effect on her breast milk and baby’s health, it is better to avoid few dietary elements that may upset your little one’s stomach. Here is the list of the foods to which a nursing mom should say NO to.

Foods to be avoided during Breastfeeding

Much Fermented Foods

fermented
Generally, the fermented foods are good for mom and the baby as healthy gut bacteria is boosted by consuming these foods. But, during nursing, eating the foods like too sour curd, Dhokla, Idli, Kefir and Kimchee are gassy and can make your baby’s stomach upset. Even if the mom has the symptoms like diarrhoea, gas or constipation, it’s better to take a break from such foods.

Spicy and Oily Foods

spicy
Pregnancy is not the only diet sacrificing phase. Even when you are breastfeeding your baby, you need to make many dietary sacrifices to keep him hale and hearty. Spicy or oily foods are not good for digestion. Even red pepper during nursing can be a threat to the baby’s digestive system. He may end up crying with stomach pain, suffer from diarrhoea or experience constipation.

Digestion Unfriendly Foods

steak
Babies have immature digestive system and anything difficult to digest can cause bowel movements in them. Some foods like maida (finely milled wheat without any bran), meat steaks or any meat recipe should be avoided as they may contain toxic fatty tissues that can upset your baby’s stomach. Low-calorie or lean meats can be eaten. E.g. Steamed chicken is better than steaks or barbequed meat.

Gassy Foods

chana dal
Even some veggies can cause gas in the moms and hence in the little ones. The vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, onions and beans are gassy. Breastfeeding moms should also overlook Chana Dal, Urad Dal, soda, hard candies and other hard-to-digest food items.

Onions

onion
Onions are a rich source of fructose, which is a natural sugar. A human body contains bacteria in the intestine and it breaks down the natural sugar causing gas. Excess consumption of onion and garlic can cause diarrhoea and nausea to even a normal person. Well, in that case, how can an immature digestive system be risked? Also some experts state that the onion can change breast milk’s taste.

Soy

tofu
Soy also has sugar molecules called oligosaccharides that are broken down in the intestine and as a result, gas is formed. However, fermented soy products are comparatively easier to digest. Soya is one of top allergen in babies. So avoid all of Soy products during breastfeeding.

Citrus Fruits

citrus
During the nursing phase, bloating and gas are common and the citrus fruits also contribute to it. High fructose containing fruits like guava, mango, apple and pears should be avoided during pregnancy as they may harm your little one’s digestive system.
Motherhood brings tons of responsibilities with it. A new mom can’t just sit relaxed after feeding her baby and placing him comfortable on a baby cradle. There are lots of other things to worry about.
Usually, moms eat everything after the childbirth as they go through a really difficult phase during pregnancy. Most of the moms notice some symptoms in the bay and then figure out what to eat and what not. The above ‘Not to include’ food items in your diet can help you escape the ‘Gassy’ situations and boost your baby’s digestion.

How to select the fish for Fish Fingers: Guide for Indian Moms :

Which Indian Fish to Feed to Baby

1. Select the boneless fish and also little firm ones like Basa, the Indian basa is usually very oily and healthy for kids. The Thai Basa are frozen and you should take proper care while defrosting it.
2. Rawas i.e. Indian Salmon is most healthy and easily available fish in India. You should select the big size fish and take the inner most slices of it. Cut the long finger size pieces
3. Surmai/King Fish: This is just like Rawas/Indian Salmon.
4. Indian Eel/ Vaam: In Mumbai its called as Vaam, this is type of Eel fish which is highly nutritious and has few long easy to remove bones. Also this one is little less fishy in taste (Funny but true, Indians don’t like Fishy tasting Fish)

Ingredients

Fillets of Basa Fish cut in the shape of fingers, oil, chopped garlic, soy sauce, salt, crushed pepper, chopped red chillies, basil leaves, oyster sauce, chopped onion greens, breadcrumbs and egg

Recipe

• Mix the fish fingers with salt, garlic, pepper, basil leaves, soy sauce and oyster sauce(Optional)
• Coat the fish with breadcrumbs + Maida mixture.
• Put the coated fish fingers in beaten eggs and again coat it in breadcrumbs (here only Breadcrumbs)
• Deep fry the coated fish in a pan till a golden brown color appears
• Absorb the excess oil, garnish and serve the hot and spicy fish fingers

If you want you can directly put the coated fish fingers in the oven or go for shallow frying.
roasted fish fingers recipe

I usually use frozen Thai Basa fillets as they are already boneless and kids don’t bind the bones while eating them. There are other options like Anchovies, Rawas fish, Surmai fish and to name a few that have very fewer bones and your kid won’t have to sacrifice the yummy taste of the fish fingers trying these fishes as well.

Summary

Every mom is worried about her kid’s vision, development, smartness, charm, bones and many other things. What if a single easy-to-prepare dish can do the work and impress the kids at the same time? Try the yummy fish fingers offering the flaky texture of the fillets at home and bring some appetizing tastes and nutritional goodness into your kid’s life.
